Freedom
Ring: Ammann & Whitney, a member of the Louis Berger Group (Berger) completed the fast-track Design/Build Freedom Ring project, the dominant feature of the Philippine Centennial Exposition commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Philippine liberation from Spanish rule. The completed project represents the largest amphitheater in Asia, located at the former Clark Air Force Base (not the Clark Special Economic Zone), adjacent Mount Pinatubo. The team led the architectural design of the complex, as well as structural, mechanical and electrical design efforts. The 35,000-seat amphitheater is covered with a translucent textile membrane structure which is designed in a dramatic leaf shape to mirror the Anahaw Palm Tree, the Philippine national symbol of strength and loyalty. The seating area is designed in the shape of a fan. The cover structure will withstand winds of 185 mph; will require little or no maintenance; and will have a life span in excess of 20 years. Ancillary projects to the amphitheater included food courts and corporate pavilions. The overall complex is a space frame structure consisting of seven independent, but identical, structures, staggered in height. Dimensions of the facility are impressive at 9 hectares of area; 300 meters in diameter and a 20-meter high landscaped berm. |
