Cultural Resources

Documenting, understanding, and interpreting the past is the domain of The Louis Berger Group's Cultural Resource Services. Internationally recognized for its prominent archaeological, historical, historic architectural, and cultural resource management and planning services, The Louis Berger Group (Berger) has conducted more than 3,000 projects throughout the United States and abroad since 1981. Berger has set the cultural resource industry standards for providing indefinite quantity and indefinite delivery services, and has earned a reputation for timely, high-quality products.

Known throughout the United States for its archaeological and historic structure surveys, Berger also prepares National Register and Section 106 documentation that often exceed state and federal standards; historic structure recordation under HABS/HAER specifications; archaeological evaluations and data recovery; impact assessments for cultural resources; laboratory processing and analysis of archaeological materials; and professional guidance for management planning regarding cultural resources.

Berger provides policy, procedure, and management assistance to individuals, corporations, institutions, not-for-profits, and governmental agencies. Supported by a multidisciplinary professional staff of archaeologists, historians, architectural historians, and technical specialists in a variety of associated fields, Berger is able to complete all types of studies, from preliminary investigations to intensive archaeological excavations and detailed architectural documentation.

The Louis Berger Group's reputation has been built by its outstanding products and timeliness. Berger has a proven track record for mobilizing large cultural resource teams and managing multiple projects and phases of investigation simultaneously.

Highlights of The Louis Berger Group's cultural resource capabilities:

Berger has an unmatched service record on large-scale urban archaeological projects. Urban archaeology projects offer exciting research opportunities that present technological and scientific challenges. Berger has developed new techniques to meet the challenges and opportunities of each urban project, while maintaining strict adherence to safety requirements and scientific standards of archaeological research. Berger can provide clients with the most advanced and cost-effective solutions to urban projects that have cultural resource concerns.

In its two decades of full-time operation, Berger's archaeological laboratory has processed over five million artifacts. Staffed by professionals, the laboratory cleans and conserves artifact collections, develops detailed inventories and catalogs using sophisticated computer databases, and performs rigorous analyses of material culture. The laboratory also provides curatorial services, preparing collections for museums and other repositories according to the standards of individual institutions.

Having documented thousands of historic buildings, structures, and properties, Berger possesses a thorough understanding of the process of architectural recordation. To collect and preserve complex architectural and engineering information, Berger staff use large format photography, photogrammetry, plane surveying, computer-aided drafting, and detailed, historically-accurate descriptive and contextual studies.
