Catawba-Wateree Shoreline Management Plan
North Carolina and South Carolina

The Louis Berger Group, Inc. (Berger) updated Duke Power’s existing Catawba-Wateree Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) in support of their re-licensing efforts. The lake system includes 1,600 miles of shoreline on 11 reservoirs in North and South Carolina. The SMP was an extremely comprehensive document and contains a description of the project, Duke’s shoreline management goals and objectives, the history of the SMP, and individual lake assessments for each of the 11 reservoirs. The individual lake assessments included shoreline use classifications, shallow water fish habitat survey results, cultural resources assessments, recreational use and boat carrying capacity assessments, and proposed recreational enhancements.

Berger updated and revised the information contained in the existing SMP. Berger also consulted with the North and South Carolina State Historic Preservation Offices, to develop a cultural resources database for all archaeological and architectural resources located within one-quarter mile of the project boundary. Berger participated in focus group meetings, and documented consultation for the SMP.

A large part of the SMP was devoted to the existing recreation facilities, current use levels, projected future use, and proposed enhancements to recreational access. Berger used the information contained in the Recreation Use and Needs study (conducted during the summer of 1999 by Berger) to make recommendations for the information contained in the SMP.
