GIS-Aided Siting Assessments for New Power Plan Projects
Carolina Power & Light Company

Berger undertook power plant siting studies aided by Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping. GIS data query capabilities allowed the client to identify and rank potential power plant sites. In reviewing over twenty sites, Berger incorporated databases on power lines, natural gas pipelines, water supply availability, wetlands, industrial activity, and land use. Satellite photography, USGS quad sheets, and utility maps were also used in the analysis. In addition, Berger identified air quality permitting issues and strategies. Berger assisted the client in priority ranking the identified potential power plant sites by joining them on the first round of site visits.
