Few areas are of greater concern to modern society than those involving the criminal justice system. These concerns present planners, scientists, engineers and economists with a challenging and demanding set of infrastructure requirements for siting, design and operation of detention and correctional facilities. In recent years, the rapid growth in the detainee and inmate population, and the increasing attention being focused on the justice and correctional systems, has led to significant investments in correctional infrastructure. Since 1983, The Louis Berger Group has been helping clients address this important social issue through the provision of planning, engineering, environmental and related services. Over the past 25 years, Berger has successfully performed over 1,500 assignments involving more than 100 justice facilities nationwide. During this time, Berger has assisted the Federal Bureau of Prisons, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (formerly U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service), the U.S. Marshals Service, the Office of the Federal Detention Trustee, along with the states of New Jersey, Connecticut, Hawaii, California, North Dakota, New Hampshire among others with planning, engineering, environmental documentation, construction management and public outreach services involving community correctional centers, prisons and penitentiaries, jails and detention facilities, courthouses and similar facilities. Services have included site investigations, cultural and natural resources studies, environmental assessments and engineering assignments. Our experts have carefully evaluated the needs of both society and the offender population to ensure economic efficiency in the planning and construction of needed facilities while meeting the mission of our justice system.
