Bibi Mahro Road Widening
USAID and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing
Bibi Mahro Road also referred to as Massoud Road , has been identified by USAID and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing as a high priority for Urban Roads program and has been undertaken to increase traffic capacity and pedestrian safety to and from the Airport. The existing roadway is approximately 2.8 kilometers in length and 17 meters in width and currently has no access control measures or median to channelize traffic allowing motorists to make dangerous passing maneuvers into oncoming traffic. Additionally, the roadway serves as the entrance to Afghanistan from the airport and therefore special attention has been given to land use, zoning and development guidelines.

The purpose of the Corridor Study is to present three roadway alternatives for this roadway project from which one Alternative can be selected for Final Design and Construction.

Alternative No. 1 is the No Build alternative and has been considered and evaluated as the existing condition.

Alternative No. 2 is an alternative that includes 4-primary lanes plus shoulders and raised median down the center, with service roads. This alternative would include an asphalt overlay of the existing pavement, which is poor condition a center median to eliminate uncontrolled passing into oncoming traffic.

Alternative No. 3 is an alternative that includes 6-primary lanes plus shoulders and raised median down the center and also includes one-way service roads on either side, as shown. This alternative would include an asphalt overlay of the existing pavement and widening, a 5.0m landscaped center median to eliminate uncontrolled passing into oncoming traffic and service roads to increase traffic capacity and parking.
