President's Message

In 1953, the Berger Group was founded as a highway consultancy, and since this time, the firm has never lost its focus on developing high-quality roads and highways. As Berger expanded around the world, we have developed major national and international routes, provided congestion relief and developed the critical secondary routes which form the backbone of all road networks.

Growing demand for cars led to increased congestion across the western hemisphere. In the United States, the number of registered vehicles has increased 87 percent since the 1970s, while in Canada the number of drivers has tripled since the 1960s. In Latin America, a booming auto market has also increased the number of vehicles traveling local and national routes. The answers to this growing problem range from increasing capacity on existing routes to implementing state-of-the-art congestion relief strategies, including Intelligent Transportation Systems and demand management. In this issue, we will focus on Berger's work to increase capacity on interstate highways, including expanding Routes 128/I-95 in Massachusetts and I-84 in New Mexico; upgrading the New Jersey Turnpike; and constructing new routes in Nevada, North Carolina, El Salvador and Peru. The Berger Group has worked with clients through all stages of development, helping to plan, design and supervise the construction of these critical routes.

In addition to building super-highways, Berger has also continued its tradition of fostering economic development through the upgrade of the secondary and local road networks. The Group has worked throughout Latin America to upgrade these routes and develop improved links, opening new areas for development and economic growth.

As a result of our dedication and commitment to quality, the Berger Group was again recognized by Engineering News-Record as the largest international highway consultancy. In this issue, we are proud to highlight some of our more recent highway achievements.
