Continuing Upgrades in Cyprus

The Berger Group has worked to improve Cyprus's sewage and water treatment systems since 1989. Over the years, Berger's dedicated work has earned the notice of many international agencies, and in 1995, the World Bank recognized the Limassol Sewage System, designed by Berger, as an outstanding eastern Mediterranean environmental project.

Recently, Berger was chosen to upgrade this system. Previously, the Team's design included an improved sewer and drainage system, 24 kilometers of gravity main collectors and 140 kilometers of lateral and branch sewers, six pump stations and a 100,000 cubic meters-per-day wastewater treatment plant. Following the completion of this system, the municipalities of Polemidia, Pano Polemidia and Yermasoia, Ayios Athanasios and Mesa Yetonia petitioned the Sewage Board of Limassol-Amathus to extend its service area to cover these regions.

To expand this system, the Team prepared master plans and conducted preliminary studies to identify the water and sewage needs of 220,000 residents and 16,000 hotel beds in the expanded Sewage Board area. The Team estimated that the Sewage Board of Limassol Amathus would need to process an additional 35,000 cubic meters-per-day and build an additional 700 kilometers of sewers to meet anticipated demand.

Berger then developed and analyzed several alternative designs, including constructing a new wastewater treatment plant in the western section of Limassol near Akrotiri Lake and expanding the existing treatment site in East Limassol to accommodate the increased flow. The Team also included a financial study evaluating the impact of the new investment plan on the finances of the Sewage Board and proposed a revision of the current tariffs.
