Water Policy in Poland

Many of Poland's rivers have been threatened by untreated sewage, and in the early 1990s, much of the nation's tap water was considered at risk. To upgrade the nation's drinking water and preserve river quality, the nation has undertaken a massive sewage and wastewater treatment initiative, building over 300 new treatment facilities and instituting strict wastewater treatment policies. As part of this initiative, Poland is upgrading the nationwide policies, guidelines and procedures for operating water treatment plants.

Under the ISPA 2000, Louis Berger SAS was selected to provide support for the Bydgoszcz Water and Sewage PIU. Berger specialists evaluated the equipment and staff needs of the PIU, reviewed the current mission, strategies and operating procedures then suggested changes in management policies to provide improved service. To ensure that the PIU is able to supervise complex EU-funded water projects, Berger experts also conducted training sessions in bid and tender procedures, document preparation, contract management, financial controls and construction management.
