Chairman’s Message

The 20th century witnessed a revolution in transportation. Now, at the start of a new century, transportation planners are striving to extend networks into the few remaining unserved areas, while increasing the efficiency of existing networks and encouraging the introduction of innovative technologies.

In this issue of BergerWorld, we revisit a key element of our emergence as a worldwide consultancy. Berger Associates began as a soils and highway design firm, but by 1959 the company expanded into the field of transportation planning. Berger's unique combination of civil engineering with economic, physical and environmental planning rapidly came to characterize our multidisciplinary practice and became the foundation of a global consultancy. From our beginnings, Berger has been a leader in the field and was ranked first in international transportation in 2004 by Engineering News-Record.

Since Berger began its transportation planning consultancy, more than 89 nations have selected the Group to expand national, regional and modal transportation networks, while training transportation planners, strengthening domestic transportation agencies and developing cost-effective funding programs for both public and private participants.

Few fields continue to demand the broad, multidisciplinary approach that transportation planners must master. Berger's extensive experience in the many facets of transportation planning has allowed the Group to remain at the forefront of the transportation planning field in the 21st century.
