Design Review at Key West International and Miami International Airports

In 2005, Florida welcomed a record number 83.6 million visitors to enjoy the state's warm weather, attractive beaches and renowned theme parks - 51 percent of those visitors traveled by air. Because of Florida's rapid growth as a popular tourist destination, it is critical that the state's airports remain able to accommodate a growing number of passengers. The Berger Group was recently commissioned by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District Six, to complete design reviews for a new terminal at Key West International Airport, as well as a new Security Operations Control Center (SOCC) at the Miami International Airport (MIA).

The Team reviewed the proposed design plans and their compatibility with each airport's overall master plan and community needs. The reviews included evaluations of all exterior as well as interior floor plans. The Team also reviewed the plans and specifications for compliance with FDOT and FAA standards and requirements. Following the thorough reviews, recommendations and comments were documented in a report and submitted to FDOT officials.

The new $30 million terminal at Key West International Airport is expected to be completed in the summer of 2007, and will ensure a safer and more pleasant experience for the flying public. The terminal will retain the character and charm of Key West through artwork and design elements, welcoming visitors to this unique tropical paradise. The 80,000-square-foot complex will accommodate an additional 600,000 passengers a year. The $23 million SOCC at MIA will support security and police administration and serve as the central command center during periods of heightened security and emergencies at the airport. The facility is being designed to house the latest state-of-the-art technology for security and operation control.
