Sangster International Airport is the principal gateway to Jamaica's most popular tourism destinations. Located in Montego Bay, the airport is one of the largest and most active in the Caribbean. In 2005, the airport serviced nearly three million passengers, and airport officials anticipate handling upwards of five million passengers by 2010. To accommodate the growth, Ashtrom Building Systems Ltd., under a design-build contract with the Berger Group's assistance, is undertaking an ambitious $104.7 million expansion program at Sangster.

Berger began the assignment by reviewing the existing terminal master plan and conducting on-site studies to identify and evaluate improvements and upgrades. The Team then prepared detailed designs, specifications and cost estimates for a 12-gate airside concourse to tie into the existing terminal; the renovation of existing gates; the installation of six jet bridges at the existing terminal; the expansion of the existing apron; the installation of a new fuel hydrant system; and improved runways, loading bridges, baggage and computer systems, ramp lighting, security systems and landscaping. Additionally, a 53,000-meter2 terminal building will be erected adjacent to the existing terminal building, with the two structures linked via a connector, to form a complex that will house new immigration and customs facilities as well as shopping areas. Finally, Berger is addressing the airport's passenger accommodation needs and assisting in the construction of parking areas and associated roadways.
