Renovating Queen Alia and Amman-Marka International Airports
Located 20 miles south of Amman, Jordan's capital, Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) is the largest airport in the country as well as an increasingly popular transit point for world travelers and international air freight. Regarded as Jordan's "gateway to the world," the airport currently accommodates three million passengers a year. Amman-Marka International Airport (AMIA) is a single-terminal facility in East Amman, mainly servicing domestic and nearby international routes. The Ministry of Transport of Jordan is in the process of upgrading and renovating the two airports and selected the Berger Group, in association with Sigma Consultants Ltd., to assess the current conditions, recommend upgrades and renovations and prepare detailed designs for the upgrades.

Berger began the assignment by evaluating the condition of the existing facilities, including terminal buildings, runways and taxiways. Based on the findings, the Team prepared a three-year plan to modernize the airports, addressing each airport's essential terminal, facility and infrastructure needs. For QAIA, Berger recommended upgrades to baggage handling systems, runway signage and landside/airside works, including runway improvements, taxiway rehabilitation, access and security road resurfacing, water supply improvements, landscaping and perimeter fence repairs. The Team also proposed upgrades to the entrance vestibules and public restrooms. Berger's recommendations at AMIA included terminal upgrades, apron extensions, and improvements to perimeter fencing, drainage and the water supply system. The assignment resulted in an efficient, cost-effective modernization plan, in compliance with the latest ICAO standards.
