Baku City, Azerbaijan

Baku (population 2,000,000) is the largest city and capital of Azerbaijan. Located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, Baku is also the nation's principal port city, consisting of two integral ports: the Downtown and the Old Inner City. In order to improve access, the government of Azerbaijan sought to construct 10 bridges and three tunnels throughout Baku City. Louis Berger SAS was selected by Baku's Ministry of Transport to provide technical assistance during the construction of the $170 million works.

The Team began the assignment by reviewing the bridge and tunnel designs prepared by Technomost. Next, Berger assisted the Ministry of Transport to prepare contract documents for the civil works contracts. During construction, the Team provided supervision services, including monitoring the project schedule; assessing the in-progress construction; ensuring that the project is in compliance with the established specifications; and preparing periodic cost estimates of the remaining works. Throughout the project, Berger also prepared reports regarding the status of the work, including recommendations for improving the project execution.

Upon completion of the project in early 2008, the works included the construction of 10 reinforced concrete bridges, ranging from 69 to 554 meters in length; three tunnels, totaling 1.4 kilometers in length; and all related approach roads.
