Edison Bridge, NJ

Spanning the Raritan River between Sayreville and Woodbridge, the original Edison Bridge provided two lanes in each direction, accommodating more than 80,000 vehicles daily. To address a number of deficiencies associated with the bridge structure, traffic operations and vehicle safety, NJDOT retained Berger to prepare designs and construction documents for the rehabilitation of the existing bridge for use as a three-lane northbound route; the construction of a new southbound bridge adjacent to the existing bridge; and the removal of two substandard bridges across the Victory Circle.

Under the design-build contract, Berger first prepared preliminary designs for the construction of a new southbound bridge adjacent to the Edison Bridge, which was configured to accommodate both northbound and southbound traffic while the Edison Bridge was closed for rehabilitation. The new three-lane southbound bridge was constructed with a lower profile over the Raritan Bridge to improve traffic safety. Next, Berger prepared designs for the removal of two substandard bridges across the Victory Circle and the replacement of the Victory Circle with a grade-separated modified diamond exchange. Finally, the Team provided designs for the rehabilitation of the existing Edison Bridge, including the removal of the bridge deck and superstructure and the modification of the existing piers.
