Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge, NJ

The Berger Group was selected by Morris County to design a replacement for the existing load-restricted Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge over the Passaic River between Chatham in Morris County and Summit in Union County. Constructed in 1906, the existing 107-foot-long bridge is 19 feet wide with two spans of simply supported through girders, floor beams and open-grid decking.

Berger first conducted feasibility and traffic surveys and engaged in community involvement to gather information on the bridge's needs. Based on the findings, Berger prepared the design for the replacement structure, incorporating two 15-foot-wide vehicle lanes and a five-foot-wide sidewalk, as well as improvements to the roadway approaches. The new 103-foot-long simple span was constructed of precast prestressed concrete beams with corrosion inhibitor admixtures in the concrete deck slab.
