Passaic Avenue Bridge, NJ

In an effort to enhance traffic and pedestrian safety and meet the growing community needs, the Essex County Department of Public Works commissioned the Berger Group to design the replacement of the existing weight-restricted, 112-foot-long Passaic Avenue Bridge over the Passaic River, a major thoroughfare connecting Millburn in Essex County and Florham Park in Morris County.

Due to the poor condition of the existing bridge, Berger prepared the design for a two-span structure with a superstructure of reinforced concrete slab and latex-modified concrete overlay supported by prestressed concrete box beams. The new 145-foot-long bridge also included two 12-foot-wide vehicle lanes, two eight-foot-wide shoulders and two six-foot-wide sidewalks. The roadway over the structure was widened from 30 to 40 feet.
