Rockaway Road Bridge, NJ

Berger was also commissioned by NJDOT to design the replacement for the 318-foot-long, five-span Rockaway Road Bridge over New Jersey Transit's Morristown Line and the Rockaway River in Morris County. Because the original bridge was rated in critical condition, Berger's design replaced it with a wider, more modern structure with improved roadway geometry over the heavily traveled electrified commuter railroad.

The new five-span bridge was constructed of adjacent precast prestressed box beams and cast-in-place concrete deck slab supported by piers with configurations matching the original bridge. The design, in coordination with the New Jersey Historic Preservation Officer, incorporated parapets with architectural details matching the existing structure to address the historic significance of the railroad corridor.
