Throgs Neck Bridge, NY

Throgs Neck Bridge was constructed in 1961 to relieve traffic congestion on the adjacent Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. It carries Interstate 295 over the East River, connecting the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx with the Bayside section of Queens and accommodating more than 100,000 vehicles per day. A&W is currently performing inspections and construction support for this vital link in New York City's interstate highway system.

The bridge's 1,800-foot-long main span and two 555-foot-long side spans are supported by two 3,205-foot-long suspension cables. Each of these cables measure 23 inches in diameter and contain 37 strands of 296 galvanized steel wires. In total, more than 13,000 miles of wire are used in the cable assembly. A&W is inspecting the main cables and providing the designs required to repair the suspension system. The Team is also evaluating the condition of the necklace lighting system and preparing contract documents for their repair or replacement. Finally, A&W will prepare contract documents for the removal and replacement of four suspender ropes to be used for testing and evaluation, which will provide the basis of their recommendations for the final treatment of the ropes.
